All Change - Fellow Bloggers Please read

This blog site has been rather neglected of late, but that's not because I haven't been busy writing about wildlife and my experiences of it. Nothing could be further from the truth. You may have read one of my more recent blog posts introducing a project I was setting up called WingSearch2020. This was going to be a 12 month venture seeing lots of birds, butterflies and moths whilst raising funds for conservation charities. Needless to say that's all collapsed in a heap. However, to promote this idea, create a platform for much more content and better vehicle for fundraising I set up a website - strangely called Wingsearch2020. I've come to realise that this provides a much better outlet for what I really want to do, that is provide an information and activity resource for people who have a general appreciation of wildlife but are not experts. East Norfolk again. Halvergate marshes to be exact where a quick scan showed a large raptor perched on a fence post. Something about it didn't look right for marsh harrier which thinking about it I don't believe I've ever seen perched on a fence post, so what was it? Before I could get a proper look it flew off and this is where the value of a long telephoto lens really assists with recording critical information. I hastily reeled off a few shots. Blowing them up on the back of the camera showed the bird to have a dark carpal patch on a largely uniform white underwing, black tipped primaries together with a definite hint of a dark underbelly and most important of all a sliver of white rump. Rough-legged buzzard. A distant view, but pretty conclusive since there has been a couple around this area all winter. Bateleur - a bird we hope to encounter Introduction The keen eyed amongst you may have noticed the logo that appeared on the front page of this blog site a few weeks ago. Maybe you wondered what on earth it means. Settle down for a few minutes and let me explain. We all know wildlife in Norfolk, the wider UK and across the world is under extreme threat, suffering dramatic declines in species numbers and abundance. There are many reasons for this, but take a look around the outskirts of Norwich, indeed any city, town or village in the country, and it will become all too clear how we are destroying our wild spaces like never before. Surely the only hope for the future is through education? Instilling in the coming generations the value of preserving our natural world and to somehow reverse this repulsive trend of complete ignorance and lack of care.
